Peter Porter 1946 – 2015

Peter at the Green House in 1997

Peter at the Green House in 1997

Peter had a lovely last day, attending the New Year’s Eve prayer service at the Dayspring.

This photo was taken of Peter greeting John Smeltzer at the Dayspring on New Year’s Eve. John had been in hospital for nine weeks, and this was his first night back at the Dayspring. Peter warmly offered his hand in welcome. Unbeknown to all us, Peter would die later that night.

With great sadness, I share the news that our beloved friend and brother, Peter Porter, died suddenly on the evening of December 31. Peter was 69 years old. He would have turned 70 on January 19th. Peter had had a lovely last day, and he had been in especially good spirits. He attended the New Year’s Eve prayer service at the Dayspring, and he delighted in the reception and fireworks that followed. Peter was back at the Green House, his home for over 40 years, when he suffered a heart attack. Despite the valiant efforts of a large emergency medical team, Peter slipped away quickly. Wendy Lywood led a circle of Peter’s friends in anointing his body. Clara helped us to sing. It was a tender farewell in the home where Peter had formed a legion of assistants, and become a dear friend to so many others. Peter had also participated for many years in a day program at Community Living York South where he was fondly regarded as a quiet treasure. Peter had been a member of the congregations of Richmond Hill United Church and St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Richmond Hill.

Peter leaves a brother, Mark Porter and sister-in-law Agnes Porter of Owen Sound, and several nephews. Peter had been pre-deceased by his brother, David Porter. Peter was the son of Ivah and “Moose” Porter who had been strong advocates for Peter and very supportive of his life at Daybreak. They welcomed many assistants to their home in Kilaloo, Ontario, and later to Ivah’s apartment in Ottawa. Ivah had visited Daybreak every Christmas for many years, and she moved to Richmond Hill to spend the last few years of her life in the 1990s.

Peter’s life was a pure gift that he shared freely and generously. As one of the L’Arche masters, Peter’s spirit will give life for generations to come.

With gratitude for all the people who knew and loved Peter,

~ Carl MacMillan
